Emergency Medicine
The College holds the distinction of being the first medical school to include the subject of Emergency Medicine in its curriculum in 1997 and continues to bring this unique offering as it becomes accredited as the first academic medical center in the country by the Joint Commission International in 2016.
Emergency Medicine is a curricular subject offered in the first semester in Year III at the St. Luke’s Medical Center College of Medicine. Despite its brief offering, the course highlights principles of triage and mass casualty response; diagnostic and treatment approaches to common medical emergencies; cardiopulmonary resuscitation skill development; the basis of advance trauma life-support and management principles of a poisoned patient. For this endeavor, we have 6 faculties serving the College with various trainings in the fields of emergency ultrasound, pharmacology and toxicology, trauma care, research and managed care.
During the academic year 2019-2020, our department has been working for the creation of the intended curriculum components for point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) to be integrated in the medical college curriculum. Due to the fast-paced and dynamic mature of emergency medicine practice, POCUS provides a very reliable tool for expediting accurate and efficient care in any emergency setting.
