News: Study on the Role of Patient Engagement in Health Systems presented at the 25th UP Manila National Institutes of Health (NIH) Anniversary Conference

The study entitled “Patient engagement in access to healthcare and essential health products in the Philippines in the era of UHC and COVID-19: a multi-method case study” was recently presented by Dr. Jake Bryan Cortez and Mr. Joseph Aaron Joe (of the Planetary and Global Health Program of St. Luke’s Medical Center College of Medicine – William H. Quasha Memorial) as an abstract poster during the 25th UP Manila National Institutes of Health (NIH) Anniversary Conference held last February 27-28, 2023 at the UP Bonifacio Global City Campus. The ongoing study explores the vital role of patient engagement in health systems strengthening towards a person-centered health system.
Current literature on patient engagement (PE) focuses on patient involvement in treatment decision-making (micro-level). Meanwhile, studies on PE at the meso- (e.g. healthcare organization) and macro- (e.g. national health policy) levels of the health system are scarce, concentrating on Western, high-income settings. The importance of PE has been reinforced by global efforts to achieve universal health care and the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, especially in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Through a case study of the Philippines, this research aims to investigate PE in the meso- and macro-levels of health systems in LMICs, particularly in the health system ‘building blocks’ of health service delivery and access to essential medicines.
